Biography

Born on February 17, 1948, in Azcapotzalco, Mexico City, José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz, globally recognized as José José, experienced a childhood steeped in music. Being the son of tenor José Sosa Esquivel and pianist Margarita Ortiz Peniche, he displayed an early inclination towards singing, even participating in amateur competitions.

His professional journey began in the late 1960s, culminating in the release of his debut album "Cuidado" in 1969. However, it was in 1970 that he achieved international fame with his performance of "El Triste" at the Latin Song Festival, captivating audiences with his powerful voice and emotive delivery.

Subsequently, his career soared with hits such as "La nave del olvido," "Amar y querer," "El amor acaba," and "40 y 20," firmly establishing him as "The Prince of Song." His unparalleled voice and his ability to convey deep emotions transformed him into an icon of Spanish-language romantic music.

Throughout his life, he faced health issues and struggles with addiction, yet his talent endured. Sadly, José José passed away on September 28, 2019, in Miami, leaving an irreplaceable void in Latin music. Nevertheless, his musical legacy lives on through his countless hits, which continue to move generations and ensure his status as an eternal legend. Indeed, his voice and unique style left an indelible mark on Spanish romantic ballads.
